History of Aloe Vera

The Miracle Plant:
One of the earliest recorded uses of Aloe can be found on Egyptian temple walls as early as 4000 BC, as “The plant of Immortality”. The Greeks used Aloe during 41-68 AD for the treatment of boils, hemorrhoids, to soothe dry and itchy skins and help wounds from bleeding. And in the Americas, the Mayan people of Yucatan used the plant to moisturize their skin and used the sap to wean their children. Knowledge of the “miracle plant” was passed down through the generations by word of mouth, where it grew indigenously it and was revered for its medicinal properties and for its seemingly magical powers of healing.

Ineffective use of Aloe Vera:
In later times, especially in northern Europe and North America it was pushed aside by the advances of modern medicine and the development of synthetic drugs. Aloe was also used ineffectively as it was allowed to oxidize before application and consumption. A technique had to found to stabilize the gel and thus ensure that it could be used in a pure and safe form by throughout the world. Various ways of processing were tried, but they all include the use of the leaf rind and some used heat, they were either unwittingly compromising the healing properties or destroying the most of the nutrients contained in the gel. Whichever technique was used the “aloin” the purgative agent underneath the rind remained.

Technological Advancements:
In the 1970s, scientists found and effective way of separating the aloin and rind and then “stabilizing” and thus preserving the gel so that it was “essentially identical to the fresh gel”. A new chapter for aloe was open.
